The Story Behind Our Coffee Ice Cubes
In October 2011, Virgina Green announced the first winners of the Green Travel Stars Award Program. The announcement was made at the annual Virginia Tourism Summit. Starboards Coffee Kiosk goes to great lengths to provide the highest quality products and preserve the environment. As a result, we have been able to create a signature line of coffee products, develop a cost savings and preserve one of nature’s most precious resources.
Since 2004, Starboards has offered a unique line of coffee beverages including: The Original Iced Coffee, Flavored Iced Coffee, Iced Café Mochas and Iced Lattés.
In 2011, Starboards introduced their newest product - the ‘Iced Coastie Joe’ (iced coffee with a shot of espresso) - as part of Portsmouth’s Coast Guard City Celebration.
Here's the twist - all these beverages are made with regular and decaffeinated coffee ice cubes.
The customer and the environment both benefit. As the ice melts, customers get more and more coffee so it enhances the flavor, and for those who enjoy caffeine, the beverage never gets watered down. The products have zero waste to the environment. Typically, most coffee shop throw out 2-3 gallons of coffee a day.
During the year, Starboards will save about 1,825 gallons of water by not discarding any coffee at the end of the day. This has resulted in zero waste. In fact, the coffee line of beverages has become so popular among locals, visitors and boaters alike that we have to brew coffee to make the ice cubes to keep up with demand. Starboards has developed a special blend of coffee that is used for the ice cubes.
Since Starboards does not have running water, we have to bring in our
own water daily. This allows us to offer the highest possible quality by using natural spring water. We also have a self-contained ice maker to create the signature line of coffee beverages. As a result, the cost savings per year is $1,425.
Since inception, Starboards has saved close to 14,000 gallons of water at a cost savings of almost $10,000.
We didn't invent the Iced Coffee. We just perfected it.

On a daily basis, Starboards saves about three gallons of coffee through the development of this unique line of coffee beverages. Since 98% of coffee is made up of water, we have been able to preserve one of nature’s most precious resources - water.

Virginia Green is Virginia's Campaign to promote green practices in tourism. It is a voluntary, recognition program that is run through a partnership between the Virginia Tourism Corporation, the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, and the Virginia Hospitality & Travel Association.
Started in 2007, Virginia Green now has more than 1,000 participants including hotels, restaurants, attractions, conference centers, visitor centers, wineries, parks, campgrounds, and many oher supporting organizations.
